I'm thrilled to find myself on Samish Island after a quick move this past summer. Along with some family and friends (and River Dog, here), I'm slowly exploring this unique place in the world and time in my life.
I am in a strange and fortunate place right now in some ways and I'm thinking that the best way to honor this opportunity (and hopefully attract more) is to use it to try something new and perhaps impractical. I'm not sure how much time I have in this cool spot, so I'm trying to use it well.
So creating a studio under those conditions feels like the right fit to develop new skills and ideas openly here and now. It's more of a concept still than a specific place with a solitary purpose. I'm really interested in emerging ideas about life (relationships, wellness, work, spirituality, etc.) and I'm giving myself a moment to play with them. I'm trying to create a space (physical, metaphysical, and virtual) where it's safe to develop ideas that challenge old ways of thinking. Where there are some safeguards against what could otherwise steal our energy and distract our attention and everything is in draft form.
Oh, and the Eagle. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for her. She flew into her tree right at eye level maybe 10 feet away from me and my amazing realtor Lynn White on our first visit. Lynn said what I was thinking: "What is even happening right now?". I think the Eagle was checking us out and perhaps sharing a tentative welcome. I say tentative 'cause I know she's watching me- hopeful, but a little dubious. It's a good accountability tool and part of why 10% will always go to local sustainability and equity work. I have to keep this particular neighbor happy with me.
I am a recovering perfectionist and I'm lucky to be surrounded by incredibly creative people (children, friends, friends' children, etc.). I'm giving myself permission to make things even if I don't know what I'm doing or have any real talent.
One result is trinkets and whatnots that are completely unnecessary, but handmade with lots of love mostly from what I find on the beach.
I also take LOTS of pictures on my phone trying to capture the stunning beauty of the places I get to be. Probably just because I'm outside a lot, I get lucky to catch cool light on the water sometimes which you'll see in a lot of the photos.
Framed and loose prints are available in the market as are photo cards. This video will give you a good idea of what else is in stock, but it changes all the time depending on what washes up in the tide..
If you'd like to try something new or revisit a hobby from another time, let me know! It feels like I have lots of talented and knowledgeable people in my life who are natural teachers as well. Check back to see who's in the studio or sign up for our newsletter. Let's play!
